East Somerset Railway
In February 2018 we were approached by Gary Amos to see if we would be interested in tendering for the reinstatement of the waiting room at East Summer Railway. We were delighted at this opportunity and were given a construction brief as well as photographs and drawings.
The East Somerset Heritage Railway is seeking to reinstate the former waiting room and the “down” platform demolished by British railways in the 1960s at its Cranmore station hub as part of a lottery-funded project to enhance the visitor experience for heritage engagement. The former waiting room would be built in the style of the original Victorian waiting room to enhance the period ambience at the station and would then be used as an education centre for visitors and school parties etc
Timber framed building using FSC timber and cladding in original style with slate style roof where possible matching features on existing heritage structures on up-platform. Guttering/downpipes in an economic material where possible to look like original structure.
The original building had a fireplace and brick chimney with the remaining building constructed from wood. It is not proposed to recreate the fireplace internally as this would restrict space for heritage interpretation facilities. In order to keep costs down and simplify construction, we wish to faithfully recreate the external look of the building and the chimney using a wood frame and genuine kiln fired ‘brick slips” to simulate the chimney structure.
Windows, door and external noticeboards to be in similar position and sizes of original where this can be determined, however entrance door should be sized to meet current regulations on disability access. Main access door to have security lock.
Window style to follow information from heritage photographs, architect to advise on need for double or secondary glazing to meet insulation requirements.
The interior finish should be plain primer on internal timber walls and the objective is to provide a building with three plain walls suitable for mounting heritage interpretation displays. Walls to be capable of taking lightweight vertical panels with printed displays and possibly 30 cm deep shelves for display of artefacts.
The project took approximately 2 weeks on site to complete and was memorable in many ways, not least having Steam Trains passing by every hour or so!
